Hawk Creek Road and Indian Creek Road Reconstruction Project

Lincoln County Department of Public Works (LCDPW) is designing improvements along Hawk Creek Road and Indian Creek Road in Lincoln County, Washington. The project is being funded by the federal Surface Transportation Program (STP), and LCDPW retained Plateau Archaeological Investigations (Plateau) to complete the cultural resource survey.

A review of previously recorded cultural resources and archaeological surveys revealed nine previously recorded archaeological resources and three previously conducted cultural resource surveys within 1.0 mi (1.6 km) of the Project Area. None are located within the Project Area. Historic cartographic references indicate that a trail followed Hawk Creek as early as 1885. Land patents (e.g., homesteads, railroad, and cash sales) that included the Project Area were filed between 1892 and 1904.

Plateau archaeologists conducted a pedestrian survey of the entire Project Area, and noted several potential historic resources during pedestrian survey. In addition 30 shovel test probes were excavated in areas that Plateau archaeologists deemed most likely to contain soil deposition and potential cultural resources. None of the shovel test probes excavated revealed any cultural materials. Should the proponent practice avoidance of identified resources outside of the Project Area, the undertaking will result in no historic properties affected.
